NSPRI Partners IFPRI on Solar Dryer Project
The Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) has partnered the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) to deploy parabolic solar dryers in selected Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kano State. The Executive Director of NSPRI , Professor Sanni Oladimeji Lateef, who was ably represented by the Zonal Coordinator of NSPRI Kano office, Dr. Benson Olushola said the partnership project was aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity in Kano State, and by extension, Nigeria by reducing post-harvest losses through sustainable drying technology.
While commenting, Prof. Futoshi Yamauchi from IFPRI who paid a courtesy visit to NSPRI Kano Zonal Office to inspect progress of the solar dryer deployment to farmers was quoted as saying "the dryers, which utilize solar energy, will provide an efficient and environmentally friendly way to preserve crops, extending their shelf life and improving marketability.'" Dr. Benson provided an update on NSPRI's progress in post-harvest technologies and how the collaboration with IFPRI will positively impact agricultural practices in the region.
According to Benson, "the solar dryers are strategically positioned in rural communities to support local farmers by reducing reliance on traditional drying methods". This initiative is expected to boost food security and economic empowerment in Kano State, as farmers will benefit from improved crop preservation and reduced post-harvest losses. He also said that the ongoing collaboration between NSPRI and IFPRI reflects a commitment to fostering sustainable agricultural development and enhancing the livelihoods of farmers in Kano State.
